welcome !

In the 1990s, Norihiko Yamanuki was contracted with a Singaporean record company FORM Record as chief engineer, producer, and composer.

He used a studio equipped with a British-made SSL console as

his workspace, and

He worked extensively with Asian artists and musicians from Europe and America.

His experience working in large studios remains valuable even in the digital age.

Beginning.

I have absolutely no academic music education.

I studied law and economics at Waseda University, but decided to drop out before my third year.

I got a job as an apprentice at a music production company's studio, and my goal was to become a recording engineer.

I aspired to become one.

I was miraculously hired by KAMIYA STUDIO Co., Ltd., led by Shigenori Kamiya, who serves as a technical advisor for the musical instrument manufacturer ROLAND.

However, the previous engineers were all gone, and there were no senior colleagues to teach me.

I was immersed in grueling days, learning everything from soldering PC circuit boards to

memorizing unfamiliar equipment by reading English manuals.

Since I was about 10 years old, I've enjoyed playing rock and jazz on guitar and drums.

While I was in university, I bought a multi-track cassette tape recorder and

enjoyed creating my own music.

One day, about a month after being hired,

I wanted to hear the music I'd composed on the studio's large speakers, so I secretly listened to it.

The studio owner, Mr. Kamiya, suddenly came in.

"Who made this?" ⇒ "Oh, it was me."

”You can become a composer.” Mr. Kimiya  said to me.

In this way, not only as a recording engineer but also as a composer

I was given a job in the spring when I was 21 years old.

New encounter.

My encounter with Synthsizer

Studio owner Shigenori Kamiya introduced the ARP2500 synthesizer to Japan and served as a technical advisor for the instrument manufacturer Roland.

The studio was filled with almost every cutting-edge synthesizer model available at the time,

including:

ROLAND System700, JUPITER-8, JUPITER-6, Juno106

ARP Odyssey, Pro Soloist, String Ensemble, Quadra,

EMS SYNTHI AKS, Oberheim OB-8, Matrix-12

KORO MS20, YAMAHA Dx7...

This encounter with the synthesizer significantly influenced my path to becoming a composer.

Sequencer MC4

The ARP2500 had its own sequencer - a circuit that programmed performance - but Roland developed the sequencer to allow the synthesizer to play numerically.

This is the MC4, famously used by YMO and Kraftwerk.

This was developed two years before I started working at the studio.

It's a nostalgic machine that I'm very familiar with.

MPU.png

The dawn of DAWs - the beginning of the MIDI standard

MPU-401

In Japan, it was the NEC-PC8801, and in the United States, it was the Macintosh.

It went on sale, and automatic playing entered the era of computer control.

A digital communication standard called MIDI was also developed for control purposes.

The photo shows the MPU-401, sold by Roland in 1984.

It is a digital conversion device.

This circuit was designed by my master, Kamiya.

I picked up a soldering iron and made prototypes many times.

Now it's a nostalgic memory.

My buddy

I would like to introduce some true friends who I am grateful for the connections that have given me so much insight.

I will do it.
